Meeting Highlights from the November 2025 Neighborhood Association meeting

Please see below the highlights from November 2025’s General Meeting.

HIGHLIGHTS

Announcements:

  • Next General Meeting: Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30pm (Location TBD)

  • The streets repaving project on Barnard and Sevier is expected to wrap Nov 10 (but we wouldn't be surprised if it takes 1-2 extra weeks)

  • Our website is live at jacksonparkavl.com. If you have something you’d like added to the website email it to jacksonparkavl@gmail.com

  • The WhatsApp group is called Jackson Park NA. Anyone may invite new members by clicking the 3 dots in the top right-hand corner!

  • Join the contact list by filling out this form

Steering Committee:

  • We’ve completed the paperwork to be an official neighborhood association and submitted it to the city!

  • We decided to submit an application for the city’s matching grant program for funds to build a pergola structure with a neighborhood bulletin board underneath it. A few different locations were proposed. We will also apply for funds to pay for our website hosting.

  • The logo and neighborhood flag competition has been extended. We will review all submissions at the December event on 12/14 (details below)

  • Future goals: 501c3 status, Neighborhood Newsletter

SPARC Committee:

  • Neighborhood Cleanup event this Saturday 11/8 10am-1pm. Meet at 93 Sevier street to divide up into groups. Supplies provided by Greenworks. Potluck and social hour from 12-1pm

  • Holiday event planned for December 14th from 2-4pm at Carol Schroeder’s house. BYO cookies!

  • Future event goals: A bonfire in Feb, A community-wide yard sale in May, A standing time for a walking group on the greenway

Mutual Aid Committee:

  • The “List” will be added to the website with a form to submit new entries

Development Committee:

  • The proposed soccer stadium development at the UNCA woods is still on hold. UNCA has hired a consultant but has not yet announced the commission they said they would when they paused the soccer stadium plans. We are staying close to Five Points and Save The Woods and will continue to gather updates.

  • Scott hosted a Community Visioning Session in August to explore other potential development ideas for UNCA’s millennial campus. The report is published at thislandstudio.com/uncawoods.

  • We explored options for group tree planting to add some street trees in the neighborhood. The city arborist and urban forester were not able to help as we had hoped. We're still planning to talk to Greenworks. We would still like to place a bulk order of native tree saplings. If you’d like some, please message Scott Burroughs on Whatsapp

  • We gathered more info on the abandoned/burned buildings at the corner of Merrimon and WT Weaver (across from Luella’s). The seller is motivated and the full corner including the auto repair shop and two houses behind that is available as a package. We are going to explore crowd-funded and not-for-profit ideas for the property. There has been a lot of interest in what this site could be for the neighborhood, so we may do an event in January to discuss further.
